DePauw Class of 2020 to get virtual recognition Sunday

Thursday, May 14, 2020

Due to the continued threat of the virus that causes COVID-19, DePauw University has postponed its in-person Sunday, May 17 commencement ceremony.

Instead, the university will be celebrating the Class of 2020 with a virtual recognition and conferral of degrees on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Virtual Recognition Ceremony working group has been gathering and compiling extensive content for the Virtual Recognition, which will be streamed on the DePauw University YouTube channel. The stream will include a live chat feature, allowing students and families to celebrate together virtually.

To ensure members of the university community have access to the ceremony, DePauw will provide translation services just as it would for the on-campus event. Information will be made available to view the event with Spanish or Mandarin translations or English subtitles.

A link to the online recognition, as well as the translation information, will be posted on the DePauw home page, the Commencement page and DePauw social media prior to the event.

Thanks to the input of faculty, staff and students, and to the contributions of many individuals in various locations, the online recognition will include:

A welcome from the president.
An address from a faculty representative chosen by the senior class.
Recognition of the Walker Cup and Ferid Murad Medal recipients.
The conferring of degrees and recognition of graduating students.
A virtual choir performance.
A senior photo presentation.
Special video tributes.

Although DePauw has not yet announced a date, the commencement working group, in consultation with faculty, staff and students, continues to plan for an on-campus ceremony.

University officials want to be able to support travel and housing for such an event and ensure that it allows for as many graduates and families to safely return to campus as possible. More information is expected soon on the plan.
