Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes.

• At 5:23 p.m. on Tuesday, James E. Vanzo, 58, Reelsville, was westbound on U.S. 40 approaching the intersection of County Road 800 West in a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. Milan L. Tyler, 69, Brazil, was westbound behind Vanzo’s pickup in a 2007 GMC Sierra registered to Blackfoot Construction Co.

Vanzo told Deputy Jeffery Freeman he signaled his intention to turn northbound on County Road 800 West. However, Vanzo’s pickup was rear-ended by Tyler’s, which caused it to hit a roadway sign, roll over and come to rest in trees.

Freeman reported the vehicle traveled about 75 yards west of the point of impact.

Tyler said he was not able to remember anything that happened. Officers believe he may have been experiencing some sort of medical emergency, though this was not confirmed.

Tyler complained of chest and head pain as well as minor bleeding.

Putnam County EMS transported Tyler to Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Vanzo was evaluated at the scene and signed a statement of release, refusing treatment. He said he was going to the hospital in a personal vehicle. Freeman observed minor bleeding.

Both vehicles were towed with heavy damage.

Freeman estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 1:55 p.m. on Tuesday, Mercedes R. Lumpkin, 20, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 325 West (Manhattan Road) passing County Road 450 South in a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu.

As Lumpkin crested a hill, she immediately encountered a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Noah J. Davis, 22, Harlan, which was stationary in the northbound lane.

Lumpkin told Maj. Dwight Simmons she could not avoid striking the trailer attached to Davis’ truck due to the wet roadway.

Davis told Simmons he had stopped in the road to “Google” an address just prior to the accident.

Lumpkin complained of minor arm pan but declined treatment.

Simmons estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000. Lumpkin’s vehicle was towed.

Deputy Kyle Lee assisted at the scene, along with the Reelsville Fire Department and Putnam County EMS.
