Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 2:40 p.m. Saturday, Brayden Chrisman, 17, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 150 North in a 2015 Hyundai Accent.

Chrisman told Deputy Tanner Brown he was traveling approximately 100 mph when he hit a bump in the road, causing him to lose control and slide over into the ditch on the opposite side of the road. The car then started to spin around as it came back across the road and into the other ditch.

The car came to rest in a field after spinning.

Chrisman complained of pain in his abdomen.

The car was towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At approximately 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Samuel A. Whitaker, 18, Roachdale, was northbound on County Road 250 East just north of County Road 1225 North in a 2010 Kia Forte.

For unknown reasons, the car drifted across the center line, through the southbound lane and then through an agriculture field. It eventually collided with a utility pole owned by Duke Energy.

Upon Deputy Matt Biggs’ arrival, Whitaker was in an altered state of consciousness and said he did not remember what contributed to the accident, only that cruise control was activated.

Due to the extent of the damage to both the car and the pole, Biggs believed speed to have been a factor.

The nature of the crash caused Putnam County EMS to call for a StatFlight air ambulance to take Whitaker to St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

While no one witnessed the crash itself, a friend who had been following told police Whitaker had been driving erratically. Additionally, a tracking app on his phone indicated he had been traveling 97 mph at some point prior to the crash.

The car was towed. Biggs estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

Roachdale Town Marshal Adrian Lepine assisted with the investigation.

• At 8:08 a.m. on Thursday, Cory J. Luttrell, 28, Indianapolis, was southbound on Manhattan Road in a 2015 Hino 195 truck owned by Cavalier Distributing, Indianapolis. Norman J. Smith, 57, Greenfield, was northbound in a 2002 Freightliner FL 50 truck registered to Sodrel Truck Lines, Jeffersonville.

The two vehicles sideswiped one another, with both driver-side mirrors heavily damaged.

Luttrell told Chief Deputy Matt Demmings the vehicles barely touched and were both in their lanes. Smith, however, said Luttrell was over the centerline in her lane.

Demmings estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500. He was assisted by Deputy Brian Helmer.
