City Police

A recent three-vehicle accident on Greencastle’s South Side resulted in minor injury and in excess of $10,000 in damage.

The accident occurred at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday as Rayman Snider, 85, Cloverdale, was southbound on Bloomington Street, approaching South Street. Driving a 2006 Jeep Liberty, Snider told Officer Brad Hiatt he momentarily diverted his attention from the roadway to make sure he had his wallet.

By the time he looked back, the traffic in front of him had stopped and Snider’s Jeep Liberty struck a 2010 Dodge Journey, driven by Charles Jones, 69, Staunton. The Jones vehicle was then pushed into the rear of a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Chasity Connor, 43, Cloverdale.

Jones, who suffered an injury that bloodied his arm, and Connor, who reported chest and back pain from her seatbelt, were treated and released at the scene by Putnam County EMS.

Snider’s vehicle was towed from the scene as Hiatt estimated $10,000-$25,000 damage in the accident.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 10:35 p.m. on Sunday, Kenneth E. McCoy, 49, Brownsburg, was eastbound on U.S. 36 approaching the bridge over Clear Creek when he hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 11 p.m. on Saturday, Trent D. Fox, 32, Greencastle, eastbound on U.S. 36 just west of County Road 475 East in a 2011 Ford Expedition when he hit a deer.

Deputy Nate Trissel estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 11:33 a.m. on Saturday, Kayla M. Inman, 25, Coatesville, was trying to pull into a parking spot at the Heritage Lake Marina in a 2016 Ford F-150 pulling an empty boat trailer.

As she did so, Fox did not allow for enough room and sideswiped the driver side front bumper of a parked 2011 Chevrolet Silverado registered to Douglas Scott of Coatesville.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman estimated damage at less than $1,000.

• At 2 a.m. on Saturday, Melvin R. Young, 40, Reelsville, was traveling northwest on County Road 275 East in a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Young told Deputy Trissel that as he came out of corner passing the intersection of County Road 350 South, he overshot the turn, overcorrected and ended up colliding with the ditch on the east side of the road causing the vehicle to roll over and come to rest on its top in the ditch.

Young said he kicked out the rear window to get himself out of the car. He said he did not need an ambulance.

Trissel estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000. The car was towed.

• At 3:28 a.m. on Friday, May 29, Natalie M. Mellott, 33, Mattawan, Mich., was westbound on U.S. 36 near County Road 300 East in a 2019 Ford Flex when a deer entered the road.

Mellott told Deputy Freeman she swerved to miss the deer and left the roadway, entering the ditch and hitting a culvert and trees.

Mellott and the children in the vehicle were all evaluated by medics and were released.

The vehicle was towed. Freeman estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
