GCSC officials examining how return to school take shape

Friday, June 19, 2020

In a letter to families of Greencastle Community School Corporation students Friday, incoming Superintendent Jeff Gibboney shared a bit of what officials are doing as they look toward resuming classes on Aug. 5.

Gibboney, who will officially take over as superintendent on July 1, notes in the letter that a plan is still in development, but that it will be before the Greencastle School Board for approval during a special meeting in July.

Like schools throughout the state, GCSC ceased in-person classes in March, utilizing eLearning for the remainder of the school year.

A wide range of possibilities are on the table for the beginning of the 2020-21 school year.

The complete text of Gibboney’s letter is as follows:

Dear GCSC Families,

Greencastle Community School Corporation appreciates the patience and understanding of our families during the past several months. We are grateful for the overwhelming support you provided your children during eLearning lessons and activities. Last week, we received guidance regarding the reopening of schools from the Indiana Department of Education in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Health and the Governor’s Office. Each entity recognizes that there will be adjustments to the guidance as information is received from federal, state and local health organizations.

School employees are currently working to develop a plan that will provide the safe return of our students on August 5, 2020. The plan will be approved by the Greencastle Community School Board of Trustees in July at a special board meeting and will be released to the public the following day via the corporation web page. We will continue to rely on a strong partnership between home and school. It will be critical that our families monitor the health of students and only send them to school if they are well and symptom free. In addition, school staff will receive professional development on the signs and symptoms to look for in students.

Greencastle Community School Corporation will continue to collaborate with the Putnam County Health Department to respond to confirmed cases of COVID-19 as well as continued consultation to keep schools open and safe.

I look forward to the safe return of staff and students in August! Enjoy your summer!

Educationally Yours,

Jeff Gibboney

Superintendent
