ROACHDALE -- A 93-year-old Roachdale man died late Tuesday afternoon when the utility terrain vehicle he was driving collided with an SUV on State Road 236.

Avery Hopkins was thrown from the Kubota UTV and later succumbed to his injuries.

Shortly before 4:45 p.m., Hopkins was westbound, just past the intersection of County Road 50 West, when he attempted to turn left into the entrance of Spear Corp.

In doing so, Hopkins entered the path of an SUV driven eastbound by 25-year-old Dakota Fulwider of Russellville.

Fulwider could not avoid the collision, T-boning Hopkins’ UTV.

The heavily-damaged UTV came to rest on the south side of the road, while the impact spun around the SUV, which came to rest facing west in the eastbound lane.

PMH Ambulance Service responded to the scene and StatFlight helicopter was called, though Hopkins passed away before he could be transported.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman is leading the investigation for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department. Because the wreck involved an off-road vehicle, Indiana Conservation Officers are conducting an investigation of their own.

An Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist is also taking part in the investigation.

Other responders on the scene included the Roachdale Fire Department, Russellville Town Marshal and Adams Towing.

The road was closed for approximately three hours.

The crash remains under investigation.

  • Somebody that cannot get a license due to his eyesight is driving an unlicensed UTV illegally on a State Highway. What could go wrong? I feel badly for the 25-year old who will have this incident following him the rest of his life.

  • Seems possible that a bad decision was made but I’m more inclined to have a little compassion for all involved.

  • Readers, a man died. Another person was involved in a life-changing accident. How about some compassion for all concerned, including the first responders who knew Mr. Hopkins well? Rest in peace, Avery.

  • Many prayers going out to both families during these most difficult days. It is not illegal to have a UTV on the highway. Accidents do happen and there is no reason for disrespectful comments to be made to the public on here.

  • @Nit it absolutely is illegal to operate an off road vehicle on an Indiana state Highway. Please don’t spread potentially dangerous misinformation.

  • People. Let's not debate the rights and wrongs of what happened. This is about showing compassion and care to this man's family and also to the other driver. Please be nice.

  • Techphcy. Sorry. I forgot to add that our distance is short

  • Nit, you said it yourself; a person just lost their life.

Sorry for everyone involved, of course, but people who text and drive, drink and drive, or operate a vehicle of any kind while endangering or threatening the lives of others by their dangerous actions are knuckleheads, to say the least. As I said, this story affects me personally.

  • Was the driver who hit Avery distracted? Anyone know?

  • Seems most of one of my posts from last night is no longer showing. Techphcy. My apologies, I was in error on UTV’s

  • @Nit making an error is entirely forgivable. I hope we all remember this as we sit here and judge the stories we read.
