Roachdale man, 93, dies in UTV crash
ROACHDALE -- A 93-year-old Roachdale man died late Tuesday afternoon when the utility terrain vehicle he was driving collided with an SUV on State Road 236.
Avery Hopkins was thrown from the Kubota UTV and later succumbed to his injuries.
Shortly before 4:45 p.m., Hopkins was westbound, just past the intersection of County Road 50 West, when he attempted to turn left into the entrance of Spear Corp.
In doing so, Hopkins entered the path of an SUV driven eastbound by 25-year-old Dakota Fulwider of Russellville.
Fulwider could not avoid the collision, T-boning Hopkins’ UTV.
The heavily-damaged UTV came to rest on the south side of the road, while the impact spun around the SUV, which came to rest facing west in the eastbound lane.
PMH Ambulance Service responded to the scene and StatFlight helicopter was called, though Hopkins passed away before he could be transported.
Deputy Jeffery Freeman is leading the investigation for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department. Because the wreck involved an off-road vehicle, Indiana Conservation Officers are conducting an investigation of their own.
An Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist is also taking part in the investigation.
Other responders on the scene included the Roachdale Fire Department, Russellville Town Marshal and Adams Towing.
The road was closed for approximately three hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
