South Putnam cancels football scrimmage, citing ‘risk/reward’

Friday, August 14, 2020

The South Putnam football scrimmage scheduled for Saturday has been canceled, however it was not for reasons related to COVID-19.

Athletic Director Tom Starnes made the announcement via twitter shortly after 1 p.m. Friday.

The Eagles were set to host Indianapolis Lutheran for the preseason scrimmage on Saturday evening.

In a separate tweet, Starnes noted that the cancellation was not due to COVID-19.

“Scrimmage cancellation was not due to any positive cases at either school,” Starnes said. “Decision made based on risk/reward for the Athletic Department and school.”

The cancellation leaves only Cloverdale with a scrimmage ahead of opening week action next Friday. The Clovers are traveling to Pike Central for a 7 p.m. Friday scrimmage.

The scheduled scrimmages of North Putnam and Greencastle had already been canceled.

At this time, all four schools are still set to kick off their regular seasons on Friday, Aug. 21.

All presale tickets for the South Putnam scrimmage will be honored at the Eagles’ home opener, set for Friday, Sept. 4 against North Putnam.
