Britain Wells sports a purple, white and gold banner in the style popularized by the women’s suffrage movement. Women’s Equality Day on Wednesday, Aug. 26 will mark the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote throughout the United States. In Putnam County, the day will be marked by an event the at the Robe-Ann band shell. Starting at 6 p.m., there will be reenactments of historic speeches by suffragettes Susan B. Anthony and Mary Church Terrell by Susan Anthony and Tosh Everson. All are invited. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and to wear masks and observe social distancing. This event is sponsored by the Putnam County Public Library, the Heritage Preservation Society and the Greencastle League of Women Voters.
