PREP ROUNDUP: GHS soccer teams peaking as Golden Boot battle nears

Greencastle will play at North Putnam on Saturday in the annual “Golden Boot” soccer matches, with the boys’ match starting at 2 p.m. and the girls’ contest beginning at 4 p.m.

The Tiger Cubs have played good soccer over the past couple of weeks, with both teams running hot heading into the rivalry matchups on Saturday.

Here is a look at recent results:

Girls

• Greencastle 4, Monrovia 1 — The Cubs led 3-1 at halftime on their way to the victory.

Kennedy Trigg and Sydney Doan each had two goals for the winners, while Doan had two assists and Katie White and Neva Brown each had one.

• Greencastle 4, Sullivan 1 — After being tied 1-1 at halftime, the Cubs scored three goals in the second half to pick up the win.

Kennedy Trigg had two goals and Raigan Chavez and Neva Brown one each for Greencastle. Brown and Trigg each had an assist, while Zoe Weltz made five steals.

• Greencastle 10, Brown County 0 — The Cubs scored seven goals in the first half and three more in the second half for the easy win.

Kennedy Trigg had three goals for the Tiger Cubs, while Katie White and Sydney Doan had two each and Zoe Weltz, Daisy Sieg and Carissa Trigg each had one.

Weltz and Doan each had four steals.

• West Vigo 4, Greencastle 1 — The Vikings held a 1-0 halftime lead and pushed across three more goals in the second half to get the win.

Abby Beauchamp had the only Tiger Cubs goal on an assist from Kennedy Trigg.

• Greencastle 2, Cascade 2 (tie) — The Cadets had two first-half goals and the Tiger Cubs tied the match with a pair in the second half.

Kennedy Trigg and Sydney Doan each had a goal for Greencastle, while Doan had an assist.

Boys

• Greencastle 5, South Vermillion 1 — The Cubs got three goals in the first half and coasted to the easy win.

• Greencastle 3, Edgewood 0 — The Cubs picked up a shutout win over the Mustangs in Western Indiana Conference action.

• Greencastle 7, Sullivan 2 — The Cubs took a 4-1 halftime lead and added three more goals in the second half for the win.

Ivan Glotzbach and Seth Kallem each had three goals to lead Greencastle, while Stephen Dombrowski had one. Benton Parmley had two assists, while Kallem and Zane Huber each had one.

• West Vigo 2, Greencastle 1 — The Vikings took a 2-1 halftime lead and made that advantage stand up in WIC action.

Ashton Owens had the Greencastle goal.

• Cascade 3, Greencastle 1 — Cascade led 1-0 at halftime and went on to record the win.

Seth Kallem had the only goal for Greencastle on an assist from Benton Parmley.

• Greencastle 3, Danville 2 — The Cubs got the only second-half goal after battling to a 2-2 halftime tie and beat the Warriors.

Ivan Glotzbach had a goal and an assist for Greencastle, while Seth Kallem had two goals.

Volleyball

• Tiger Cubs drop pair — Greencastle lost a pair of 3-0 matches this week to tough opponents.

On Thursday, Monrovia defeated the Tiger Cubs by scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-23.

The team was led by Carmen Bridges with 12 kills and nine digs, Shay Baker-Watson with 25 assists and 15 digs, Hannah Winters with 14 digs and Juliette Tomamichel with seven kills.

Lilly Meyer added 10 digs for the Cubs.

On Tuesday, South Putnam improved to 17-1 on the season with a 25-14, 25-16, 28-26 victory.

Leading the Cubs were Lilly Meyer with 18 digs and 10 kills, Anna Zellers with 16 assists and 10 digs and Juliette Tomamichel with six kills. Shay Baker-Watson and Hannah Winters both added 10 digs.

Grace Burdge had 18 kills for the Eagles, while Brie Miller had 10 and Marietta McGinnis added nine.

Burdge served four aces and recorded 18 digs, while Brionna Egold had three blocks. Chloe Custis and Chloe Pistelli each had nine digs.

• Brown County 3, Cloverdale 0 — The Eagles won by scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-17.

“We did a good job of improving in each set,” Clover coach Jim Spencer said. “We had too many serve receive and ball handling errors early in the match but continued to improve in sets two and three.”
