FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Football ticket sales expanded in Putnam County
Thanks to a recent change by Gov. Eric Holcomb in regard to attendance at outdoor gatherings, Putnam County high schools have received approval to expand their ticket sale for football games.
Cloverdale plays at Greencastle this week, while South Putnam hosts Brown County and North Putnam hosts West Vigo.
Greencastle athletic director Doug Greenlee said he will be selling more tickets, but some safety precautions will still be observed.
Fans are still required to wear masks and maintain a safe social distance. Seating will be allowed in alternating rows, and those not to be used will be marked.
At South Putnam, the Eagles will have a limit of 700 tickets available.
North Putnam will also be selling more tickets than was permitted in the first six weeks of the season.
Fans are advised to check with their school for more ticket information.
Odds and ends
• South Putnam has wrapped up the “Green Division” of the Western Indiana Conference.
The Eagles are unbeaten through four games, and hold a tiebreaker over the winner of tonight’s West Vigo North Putnam game — between the only two teams who could tie them.
Northview and Indian Creek are both 2-0 in the “Gold Division” and are headed for a likely championship matchup in the final week of the regular season.
• South Putnam moved up two spots from last week in the Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 1A rankings.
The undefeated Eagles were seventh last week, and have moved up to fifth this week. The Eagles also moved up one spot from seventh to sixth in the Associated Press poll.
South Putnam is one of four Class 1A teams to have a 6-0 record. Two other teams are also undefeated but have not played a full schedule.
The Eagles will play winless Indianapolis Shortridge on Oct. 9 before closing out the regular season on Oct. 16 at home against Class 2A No. 5 Heritage Christian.
Sectional action begins Oct. 23. The sectional draw will be televised on ihsaatv.org on Thursday, October 8.
• Two of the best games in the state were played nearby last week, as Northview topped Class 1A No. 1-ranked Indianapolis Lutheran 26-25 in double overtime and South Vermillion scored with 10 seconds left to edge Parke Heritage 51-44 to take over first place in the Wabash River Conference .
At Northview, fullback Ilias Gordon caught a five-yard touchdown pass at the end of the second overtime.
Kicker Patrick Corrigan, who had his point-after attempt blocked in the first overtime, drilled the game winner this time and the Knights improved to 5-1.
At Rockville, South Vermillion quarterback Anthony Garzolini scored on a quarterback sneak with 10 seconds left and his team trailing 44-43.
The Wildcats scored the two-point conversion and got back on the winning track after losing to Sullivan the previous week.
