Football sectional pairings announced

Thursday, October 8, 2020

Pairings were drawn on Thursday night for the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s football sectionals, which begin on October 23.

In Class 1A, No. 5/6-ranked South Putnam will play at winless Fountain Central in the first round. Cloverdale, which canceled its scheduled game for tonight at West Vigo due to low player availability, will host Covington in the first round.

South Putnam (7-0) and Parke Heritage (5-1) are considered the favorites in this eight-team field. Last year’s winner was North Vermillion.

In Class 2A, North Putnam (1-6) will host a first-round game with Southmont (2-4). The teams met in the second week of the season, with the Mounties recording a 21-14 victory.

South Vermillion (6-1) has the best record in the eight-team field. Western Boone is the two-time defending sectional and state champion.

In Class 3A, Greencastle (3-4) will be on the road to play Indianapolis Washington (2-4). Undefeated and top 10-ranked Danville has the best record in the sectional to this point.

Odds and ends

• After Cloverdale canceled its game with West Vigo, the Vikings switched opponents to Parke Heritage — which had its game canceled with Riverton Parke due to a COVID quarantine issue. On Thursday evening, the West Vigo-Parke Heritage game was canceled, and both teams will take this week off.

Through seven weeks of the season, 127 of the 320 schools playing football had missed at least one game due to either having COVID problems or having an opponent with those issues and being unable to find a replacement.

• In the Western Indiana Conference, Northview meets Edgewood and Sullivan battles Indian Creek tonight in the “Gold Division.” Should both teams win, they would play next week in Brazil for the division championship.

South Putnam has won the “Green Division” championship, and West Vigo will finish second at 3-1. Forfeited or canceled games do not count as victories for the available team, and are simply disregarded in league standings.

• In Class 1A Sectional 45, four teams are above .500.

In Class 2A Sectional 37, South Vermillion is 6-1 and Seeger is 5-1, with Speedway and Western Boone just above .500 at 4-3.

In Class 3A Sectional 29, Danville is undefeated at 5-0, while Indian Creek, West Vigo and Tri-West are all 5-2.

• Here’s a recap of teams this year coached by people with Putnam County ties:
