A Celebration of Life for Patrick will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Greencastle. A Remembrance Service will begin at 2 p.m. Patrick did not return from a solo climb of Tavan Bogd in the Altai Mountains, Mongolia, in September 2019.

Patrick was an excellent student and a lifelong learner. He attended Purdue University on a Beering Presidential Scholarship, where he earned a B.S. in chemical engineering and an MBA from the Krannert School of Business.

Patrick began hiking the Appalachian Trail while in college and continued hiking segments when time allowed. In spring of 2019, he extended his progress on the AT to the southern border of Maine and planned to complete the final 200 miles (including his 50th and final, state high point) when he returned to the United States.

Patrick worked in California, Malaysia and most recently in China. In addition to working as an engineer and a plant manager, Patrick taught English at a University in Pinghu, China. From these locations, he pursued his passion of traveling to more than 100 countries, and hiking the highest peaks in the world. (summitpost.org/users/atavist/26130).

Patrick is survived and dearly missed by his parents, Joe and Jackie Baumann, Greencastle; daughter, Shannon Mao Baumann, Shanghai, China; sister, Jill (Chris) Hagan, niece Ellie and nephew Leo, Indianapolis; grandfather, Joseph Baumann, Kentucky; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins across the United States, France and New Zealand; and many friends and climbing companions around the world, who respected his knowledge, skills and philosophy of life.

Instead of flowers, the family requests those who wish to send a remembrance, contribute to the scholarship fund established at the Putnam County Foundation in memory of Patrick, to benefit a student from GHS who will attend Purdue University.
