Skateboarder struck by car escapes serious injury
A 21-year-old DePauw student hit by a car Wednesday morning near the Greencastle Post Office was transported to the hospital but escaped serious injury.
The incident occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. as Jacob Correa of Greencastle was crossing Walnut Street at Vine Street on a skateboard.
Correa saw the eastbound sedan approaching, but believed the driver would stop short of the crosswalk at the stop sign. He was already in the path of the car when he realized it was not going to stop in time.
Clarence M. Long, 79, Greencastle, was eastbound on Walnut Street approaching the intersection in a 2003 Chevrolet Impala. He told police the sun was in his eyes and he did not see Correa until the car hit him.
Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin said Correa was alert talking to responders, complaining only of left knee pain.
Putnam County EMS transported Correa to Hendricks Regional Health for his injury.
Also at the scene were additional Greencastle Police officers and the Greencastle Fire Department.
