Cloverdale School Board examines internet, virtual attendance policies

CLOVERDALE -- With it running about 20 minutes, the Cloverdale School Board made quick work of its regular meeting held Monday evening. Their main focus was on a couple of school policy updates.

Superintendent Greg Linton first touched on the corporation’s internet safety policy through the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). The policy must meet the law’s requirements in order for the corporation to maintain its e-rate funding for discounts on related technology.

While providing that the policy met the requirements and no action had to be taken, Linton added that students in the Cloverdale Virtual Success Academy also had to follow its rules.

The board also approved an updated policy to the online academy regarding attendance. Saying the “primary issue” was whether students are online each day, completing assignments and showing progress, Linton said the policy gives guidance to counseling and administration.

In other business:

- The board approved additional appropriations for the corporation’s lease finance. Linton said this was an addition to a budgeted amount.

- The board approved improvement plans for each of the Cloverdale schools. Linton said that principals and teachers had gone through the plans and updated them.

The board also approved the following personnel report:

• Resignations: Gabrielle Hardy - Cloverdale Elementary School instructional assistant and Dennis Weir - Cloverdale Middle School instructional assistant;

• Employment: Jessica Burdge - bus driver; Sara Hoke - bus driver; Angela Ladd - Cloverdale Elementary School instructional assistant; and Kathy Salter - Cloverdale Middle School instructional assistant;

• Coaching: Josh Meyers - volunteer assistant varsity wrestling coach.

The board also recognized Cloverdale’s Students of the Month:

- Cloverdale Elementary School: Alaina Chambers

- Cloverdale Middle School: Levi Johnson

- Cloverdale High School: Jessica Geiger

Students of the Month are being recognized in their respective buildings, in place of doing so in person at board meetings due to crowding.

Board member JaceAnn Troutt was not in attendance.

The next regular meeting of the Cloverdale School Board is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9 at the Arthur L. Johnson Administration Office near Cloverdale High School.
