Toddler shoots mother in Hendricks County incident

DANVILLE -- A two-year-old boy apparently shot his 40-year-old mother after finding a handgun in his home Thursday morning at a residence along U.S. 36, just east of the Putnam-Hendricks county line, authorities said.

At approximately 9:20 a.m. Hendricks County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home in the 6400 block of west U.S. 36, west of Danville, on the report of a person shot.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the young boy located a semi-automatic pistol within his home and accidentally shot his mother.

A five-year-old sibling, who was also at home at the time of the incident, and called for help for their mother.

The mother was transported to an Indianapolis hospital and is now said to be in stable condition.

The two children were not injured during the incident.

Child Protective Services and Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office detectives are following up on this case.
