The Greencastle Virtual Music Festival releases its newest program at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. “Starry Nights and a Sunlit Afternoon with Claude Cymerman” brings us the renowned DePauw Professor of Music Emeritus performing the world premiere of his transcription of Ernst von Dohnányi’s “Variations on a Nursery Tune, Op. 23.”

In this multimedia presentation, Cymerman’s solo piano performance will at times be combined with a slideshow of dramatic nighttime photography by local artist, photographer and author Stu Fabe.

Audience members can participate in a Zoom watching/listening party at gvmf.live at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, including a post-concert chat with GVMF host Eric Edberg and Fabe.

“We’re doing everything possible to create a time to connect and engage with each other while we are not able to have concerts with in-person audiences,” Edberg said, “and we are really enjoying our Wednesday evening get-togethers.”

The program can be experienced online any time after the debut at greencastlemusic.org or facebook.com/greencastlevirtualmusic.

“The nursery tune in question is most commonly known as ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,’” explained Edberg, “although it is also the melody for ‘Baa, Baa, Back Sheep,’ the alphabet song, and many others. Dohnányi’s work spans the complete gamut of human emotion, from intense drama to light humor. Listening to it, I thought of the extraordinary night photography of Stu Fabe and realized it would be wonderful to combine the two.”

Wednesday’s program, which was professionally video and audio recorded in Cymerman’s home by Matthew Champagne of Bloomington, will include Edberg narrating a brief “what to listen for” introduction with Cymerman playing brief excerpts of many of the variations.

The Greencastle Virtual Music Festival is made possible by the Greencastle Summer Music Festival family of donors and the GSMF’s endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation, the Putnam County Convention and Visitor Bureau, the DePauw Performing Arts Series and the Inn at DePauw.
