Supporting Our Police

Monday, November 9, 2020
American Legion Post 58 gave two donations between the Greencastle Police Department and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office recently. Post 58 Commander David Hollis presents a $1,000 check to Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin with (above, from left) Post 58 Finance Officer Tim Williams, Assistant Chief Brian Hopkins and Post 58 member Bob Tyler also present. Hollis gives another $1,000 check to Sheriff Scott Stockton with (below, from left) Maj. Dwight Simmons, Williams, Deputy Brian Helmer, Deputy Kyle Lee (with K9 Cain) and Tyler stand alongside. The funds will go toward portable breathalyzers for GPD and new ballistic vests for PCSO.

  • K9 officer Cain that the Sheriff's Dept. stole from the City for peanuts!! Whatever happened to Kyle Lee after he drove the wrong way on a one-way street (E. Walnut) at a high rate of speed only turning on his siren at the last second prior to totaling several vehicles (at least 3), severely damaging a wall on the city's Vine St. parking lot and putting many citizens at risk? That occurred this past January and it seems that this has been swept under the rug.

  • @g&z there is a long history of the local media under-reporting on police actions, much like the time in 2013 when I stood in the front yard of a local farmer and took photos of a crashed ISP cruiser after a chase along US 40, yet even after I posted those photos to the Banner’s Facebook page, there was no acknowledgment of a crash, and no mention of the trooper’s medical condition.

I also found it quite telling how many stories of corruption in our sheriff’s department pre-Scott Stockton were brought to us by news sources other than the Banner. From TJ Smith’s beating of suspects in custody to Jon Chadd and others burying the truth, to Mark Frisbie’s DUI, all were hushed around Greencastle until other outlets broke the stories and forced the Banner’s hand.

I have to wonder, if the US Attorney never filed charges, would the violence against citizens by the PCSD have ever been investigated by our local reporters at all?

  • You can focus on the police all you wants; but let's not forget the "so called" upper crust around Putnam County. The dirty judges, prosecutors, doctors, lawyers, so-called Christian individuals who cheat on their wives and even a big political candidate who is a child molester. I would love to give names, which I could, but I don't want to be sued. But they are out there....believe me.

  • I commented to G&Z yesterday that one day they will need a police officer, and they might want to keep their mouths shut. And....that comment disappeared. Please don't pick and choose who you want to let post and who you don't. My comment was nothing compared to the ones above.

  • Did you notice the difference in the pictures??---No social distancing practiced at all, which it would be difficult to do and get the picture. However, no masks at all for either the Sheriff's Dept or the American Legion representatives, just the Greencastle City Police Chief and Assistant Chief.

Also, Queen53, I am very supportive our local law enforcement, but when one of them causes physical injury and massive property damage due to poor judgement and ignoring the laws they are sworn to uphold that is an issue with me and should be for everyone else.

  • A big shout out to the American Legion for the generous donation to our local Police and Sheriff. I’m sorry this article brought up bad pennies from the past. Thank you American Legion and a big thank you to everyone of our officers who go above and beyond.
