A distracted driver crashed into utility pole on the city's North Side Sunday morning, bringing down two utility poles and causing traffic to be diverted.

At 9:50 a.m. Creigh Remsburg of Greencastle was northbound on U.S. 231 (North Jackson Street) in a 2003 Dodge Durango. After he crossed the CSX railroad crossing just north of Shadowlawn Avenue, Remsburg's SUV left the east side of the road.

In doing so, the vehicle struck both a Duke and a MetroNet pole, bringing down power and communications lines. The vehicle stopped on the grass in front of Muffler Connection at 816 N. Jackson St.

Remsburg was not injured.

Greencastle Police Department Sgt. Ed Wilson reported Remsburg was distracted, leading to the crash.

Besides GPD, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and Greencastle Fire Department responded to the scene.

Traffic control was difficult due to the busy nature of U.S. 231 and the limited options for diverting traffic on the North Side.

  • Distracted drivers (probably texting on a cell phone) should have to pay for the damages they incur.

Don - don't you just think he made a mistake though?

  • Don- He was distracted by a dog! He chose NOT to hit the dog sparing a family the heartache of an injured pet! I would hope you would do the same thing!

  • How fast was he driving, to hit and break two utility poles . I would think a little above the speed limit

Greencastle grandma - If my choice is running off the road, or hitting a dog...sorry pooch!

I have taught my children the same. They are more valuable than an animal.

  • I was taught if a dog runs out in front of you while driving, in order to avoid being hit from behind, to run over the dog. As far as the pet goes doesn't Greencastle have an ordinance that dogs must not be allowed to roam freely on the streets?

I, personally, have driven over the same tracks thousands of times going in both directions. The driver must have been going too fast. Especially going North. I still think the driver should be financially responsible for the damage to 2 poles.

Just my opinion. But, some joker on this site will chime in and castigate my comments.

    Let it roll.

  • Regardless why he ran off the road he is responsible for 100% of the damages. At the cost of replacing utility poles I sure hope he had insurance.
