BRAZIL – Coming off its thrilling run through the Wabash Valley Classic last week, Greencastle’s boys basketball team returned to action Friday night when the Tiger Cubs made the trip west to take on Northview.

Waiting for the Tiger Cubs was a team looking to bounce back from a double-digit loss at North Putnam two days prior.

Northview came out of the gates ready to go, building an early advantage.

However, Greencastle chipped away throughout the evening and finally broke through in the third quarter when the Tiger Cubs ended the period with 10 straight points.

But a cold finish was what followed, as Greencastle could only muster eight points in the fourth, leading to a 54-48 loss, snapping the Tiger Cubs’ nine-game winning streak.

“I thought Northview played really well. I thought they were better than us. They were more physical than us, tougher than us. They made a lot of plays that win you basketball games. We made hardly any plays that win you basketball games,” Greencastle coach Bryce Rector said.

Things got off on the wrong foot for Greencastle early on in the evening.

Northview opened the game with 10 straight points, putting the Cubs in a quick hole.

Making matters worse? Brody Whitaker was whistled for a pair of fouls less than four minutes into the contest.

Rector kept his leading scorer on the floor, but trying to keep himself away from a third foul that would have certainly relegated him to the bench for the remainder of the half, Whitaker was clearly affected by it.

“I think it hampered him a little bit,” said Rector of Whitaker’s early foul trouble. “In the first half, it takes away some of the things you can do and how he feels and how the game flows for him. I just didn’t think he did a very good job of playing through contact tonight, which had been a strength of his. I thought Northview did a nice job of defending him. Their game plan was really good on him. They were just more tough, more physical than us.”

Despite being tagged with a pair of fouls, Whitaker still found ways to put the ball in the basket, while also opening up clean looks for his teammates.

Greencastle, down by as many as eight in the first half, whittled the Northview lead to one at the half and then finished the third quarter with a 10-0 run sparked Whitaker’s four points and six points from Benton Parmley, who sunk a buzzer-beating 3 to cap things off.

However, Northview answered with a fourth-quarter-opening 9-0 run to regain a lead it would never surrender.

The Tiger Cubs got within a pair on two separate occasions, but could never get themselves any closer.

“We made a couple of big plays at the end of the third quarter and then just kind of lost momentum there in the fourth,” said Rector.
