Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 7:10 a.m. Tuesday, Preston A. Lady, 24, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 725 West in a 2002 Ford F-150.

The gravel road was covered in ice and as Lady attempted to round a corner, he lost traction and went straight. He could not regain control and left the road, hitting a tree.

The truck was heavily damaged and had to be towed, but Lady said he was not injured.

Deputy Brian Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 11:53 a.m. on Monday Deputy Scott Ducker was dispatched to a crash on County Road 600 West. Brian L. Montgomery, 43, Greencastle, had apparently been southbound in a 2014 Ford F-150 when he lost control and ran off the west side of the road, into a tree.

Montgomery told Ducker the electronics went out on his truck, causing him to lose control.

At the time of the crash, there was significant snow and ice on the roadways and ground, but the ground under the truck was dry, indicating it had been sitting there for at least a few hours. Montgomery would not tell Ducker how long ago the crash had occurred.

The deputy estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000. The impact caused significant passenger-side damage and the truck had to be towed.

• At 11:37 a.m. on Monday, D. M. Benassi, 67, Greencastle, was eastbound on State Road 240 west of County Road 500 East in a 2005 Pontiac Montana.

Freezing rain was coming down in the area and the road was covered in ice. Benassi told Deputy Helmer he was traveling 35 mph when he lost control, spun a couple of times and then hit a road sign.

Helmer estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 9:50 a.m. on Monday, Josalyn E. Cox, 19, Greencastle, was eastbound on County Road 125 South going around a curve in a 2002 Honda Accord.

Cox told Deputy Ducker the vehicle started sliding. She applied the brakes and then completely lost control, sliding off the south side of the road and hitting a utility pole.

The car was towed. Ducker estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 12:14 p.m. on Saturday, Michelle D. Stevenson, 34, Martinsville, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu.

Stevenson told Deputy Kyle Lee she had a tailgating vehicle following her and as she turned north onto County Road 725 East, she did not notice a vehicle southbound on 725 East at the intersection.

She struck the front bumper of the 2012 Ford Focus driven by Gracie L. Johnson, 18, Coatesville.

Both vehicles were drivable. Lee estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.
