Multi-instrumentalist and Grammy nominee Hubby Jenkins, an exponent of old-time American music and African American history, is featured Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the Greencastle Virtual Music Festival’s first live-streamed event, with Jenkins appearing from his home in Brooklyn.

The online event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at http://gvmf.live.

Jenkins is a talented multi-instrumentalist who endeavors to share his love and knowledge of old-time American music. Born and raised in Brooklyn he delved into his southern roots, following the thread of African American history that wove itself through America’s traditional music forms. As an integral member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and later Rhiannon Giddens band, Jenkins has performed at festivals and venues around the world, earning himself both Grammy and Americana award nominations. Today he spreads his knowledge and love of old-time American music through his dynamic solo performances and engaging workshops.

“We are thrilled to present Hubby Jenkins,” said DePauw Professor Emeritus of Music Eric Edberg, who is the festival’s founder and host. “I’ve been watching his videos on YouTube, and they are terrific. This is our first time presenting an artist live, rather than pre-recorded, streamed from another part of the country, with an audience of folks from around the world, including many in the on and off-campus DePauw community. Our motto is ‘community through shared arts experiences,’ and this exemplifies that.”

The program is co-presented by the DePauw Performing Arts Series and is the opening event of DePauw’s Cultural Legacies of the Great Migration Symposium, which continues with numerous speakers on Thursday Feb. 25. More information is available at https://depauw.campuslabs.com/engage/event/6873358.

The Greencastle Summer Music Festival presents a program with a Zoom watch party and post-concert discussion every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at http://gvmf.live. This week is the festival’s 19th weekly program.

Previous programs can be viewed anytime at http://playlist.gvmf.live and facebook.com/greencastlevirtualmusic.

Virtual Music Festival programs are made possible by the Greencastle Summer Music Festival family of donors and the GSMF endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation, the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the DePauw Performing Arts Series, the Inn at DePauw, the people of Gobin Church, and in partnership with the Sunny Side concert series.

Contributions, which provide income for musicians impacted by the pandemic shutdown of live performances, can be made at greencastlemusic.org/donate.
