Library Board approves parental leave policy

Thursday, February 25, 2021

After not having one spelled out, the Putnam County Public Library now has a policy for staff members when it comes to paid parental leave.

The library’s board of trustees approved new language for this policy during its regular meeting held Wednesday evening.

Up to four weeks (or 140 hours) of parental leave will be provided to full-time employees following the birth or adoption of a child under 18 years old.

This is provided, as the policy states, “in recognition of the importance of work/life balance and offering parents the opportunity to bond with their new child.”

Other stipulations include taking parental leave within six months following birth or adoption, as well as it being taking either continuously or in week-long increments. Employees may also request to use accrued paid and unpaid leave six months after the birth or adoption.

The board also approved a resolution to amend the library’s donation policy. Language was added to reflect that items may be donated to other nonprofits.

The policy also provides that donated items may be added to the library’s collection, given to the Friends of the Library for book sales or discarded if their conditions warrant it.

The whole board was present for the meeting, which was held via Google Meet.

The next regular meeting of the Library Board is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 at 6 p.m. Those interested may contact PCPL for more information.
