DePauw rolls to win at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio — DePauw totaled 449 yards of offense and held host Wooster to just 210 on the way to a 37-3 exhibition football win over the Fighting Scots on Saturday.

The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first as quarterback Chase Andries scored on a 7-yard run and then tossed a 5-yard scoring pass to Cam Haynes. Haynes was then on the receiving end of an Andries 21-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left in the half to push the lead to 20-0.

Will Schmidt and Gabe Quigley rushed for touchdowns in the third and Jack Drake booted a 19-yard field goal in the fourth. Wooster tacked on a late field goal for the game’s final score.

Andries competed 17 of 26 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 41, Schmidt led all rushers with 97 yards in 20 carries. Josh Major caught five passes for 70 yards, while Devon Valentine hauled in four.

Wooster’s Mateo Renteria completed 11 of 27 passes for 86 yards including five to EJ Humphries for 28 yards. Troy Baughman rushed for 30 yards on 11 tries.

Nathan Seifert led the DePauw defense with seven tackles, while Tyler Myers and Joe Zanca each totaled five. Dylan Hyatt and Ben Higgins each picked off one pass in the win. Langston Williams paced Wooster with 10 tackles.

DePauw wraps up the 2020-21 season on Saturday, March 20, with a home game against Greenville. A limited number of DePauw spectators will be permitted.

Baseball splits DH, wins series

Charlie Patrick’s three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth of game two Sunday against Concordia capped a comeback that started with the Tigers trailing by eight runs and ended in a 15-13 win, a doubleheader split and series win. The Cougars won the opener, 9-6. DePauw is now 7-3, while Concordia moved to 1-3.

The Tigers trailed 9-1 in the nightcap after Concordia scored two in the first, one in the second and three each in the fifth and sixth. DePauw’s run came in the third on Nick Nelson’s double to score Danny Sheehan.

The comeback started in the sixth as the Tigers plated five runs, but Concordia countered with two in the seventh to make it 11-6. DePauw cut the deficit to 11-10 in the seventh on a two-run single by Kyle Callahan and a two-run double from Kyle Boyer. The Cougars stretched the lead to 13-10 with a two-run eighth.

Nelson’s two-run homer in the eighth cut the Concordia lead to 13-12 before Trey Shaw and Callahan singled, setting up Patrick’s blast that came on the first pitch he saw and landed over the fence in right center.

In the top of the ninth, Griffin Albright wrapped up the win on the mound with his second inning of hitless relief as he recorded the final two outs via strikeouts.

Callahan had four of DePauw’s 15 hits, while Nelson added three with Shaw and Patrick totaling two apiece. Patrick drove in five in the win. Kevin Garcia paced Concordia with four of its 18 hits.

Albright moved to 1-0 and struck out four of the eight batters he faced. Mike Tobin dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

In the opener, each team scored in five different innings, but Concordia put together a 3-run second and led the rest of the way.

Shaw, Spencer Youngcourt and Jack Fitzgerald each had two of DePauw’s nine hits. Howie Hatton and Garcia each had two of Concordia’s 10 hits.

Cameron Hawk dropped to 0-1 with the loss, while Westin Stutzman improved to 1-0 and Robert Perna picked up his first save.

Volleyball falls at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — The DePauw University volleyball team came up short in its loss to Illinois College, losing in five sets (19-25, 24-26, 25-13, 25-23, 16-18) after being down two sets to none.

In their first match of the season, the Tigers took some time to find their rhythm, dropping the first set 19-25. Though DePauw and Illinois College had seven ties and three led changes in the first set, the Lady Blues recorded 13 kills to the Tigers six.

In the second set, Jessica Levy recorded five of the 13 kills, while Jenna Purichia led the team with seven digs in the set. Despite its efforts, however, the Tigers still committed seven errors throughout the set, losing set two 24-26.

Down by two sets, DePauw came out swinging in the third set. The Tigers recorded nine kills, just three errors, and out-blocked the Lady Blues 6-1, resulting in an attacking percentage of .214. DePauw would extend the match after a dominating 25-13 win in set three.

After holding Illinois College to just 13 points in the previous set, the Tigers and Illinois College traded points in the fourth set. With three ties and three lead changes, DePauw’s team effort kept the Tigers on top, resulting in a nail-biting 25-23 victory in set four.

In the match’s final set, the Lady Blues and DePauw were neck and neck, with neither team able to pull away. Despite the Tigers’ efforts to stay just a couple of points behind Illinois College in the final set, the Lady Blues would finish set five with 12 kills and just one error, winning the set 18-16.
