A 19-year-old Pittsboro woman had to be transported to an Indianapolis hospital for her injuries in a Saturday, March 27 head-on crash on U.S. 231.

Morgan E. Bell had been northbound on U.S. 231 in the area of County Road 700 South in a 1996 Buick Centra. She could not give a report to Deputy Robert Soilleux because she was pinned in the car and did not regain consciousness.

Jose A. Becerra, 27, Cloverdale, told Soilleux he was southbound in a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado when he observed a vehicle northbound in the southbound lane, passing another vehicle. He said the wrong-way vehicle drove onto the west shoulder of the southbound lane as if it was going to drive off the road to avoid a collision.

Becerra said he moved toward the center line to avoid the other vhicle but at the last second the car swerved back into his lane, where they hit head on.

Numerous items in Bell’s car had to be cut away in order to free her, after which she was transported to the hospital.

Soilleux was able to contact Bell’s mother and tell her of the crash. The mother said her daughter was on her way to meet up with friends in Cloverdale and did not know why she would have been northbouund on 231.

Becerra said that he was sore, with some pain in his chest. His 10-year-old daughter also complained of pain. While they refused treatment on the scene, they said the would have family or friends drive them to the hospital.

Soilleux was unable to locate the vehicle being passed or anyone else who witnessed the crash.

The deputy estimated damage at $50,000-$100,000.
