Governor signs bill sponsored by Baird to erect monument honoring suffragettes
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has signed a bill into law sponsored by District 44 State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle) to erect a Statehouse monument honoring Hoosier suffragettes.
Baird said Senate Enrolled Act 6 extends the Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission’s work to 2024 as they create a Statehouse monument honoring the 19th Amendment.
Baird co-authored the 2019 law creating the commission, which was tasked with commemorating the 100-year milestone of women’s right to vote in Indiana, but the group was set to expire this year.
“Indiana’s history is full of strong female leaders who deserve to be remembered and celebrated,” Baird said. “Honoring those who fought for the 19th Amendment and were active in the women’s suffrage movement with a monument gives Hoosiers a permanent reminder to never give up fighting for what you believe in.”
Indiana was the 26th state to ratify the 19th Amendment during a special session on Jan. 16, 1920.
Senate Enrolled Act 6 goes into effect July 1, 2021.
State Rep. Baird represents House District 44, which includes all of Putnam County and portions of Clay, Morgan, Owen and Parke counties.
