County Jail

Ten people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Monday

• At 6:35 a.m. Dustin M. Tippin, 45, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail for possession of methamphetamine and driving with a suspended license.

Sunday

• At 10:45 p.m. Maurice A. Waller, 36, Lafayette, was housed at the jail for possession of a cellular telephone while incarcerated.

• At 6:27 a.m. Earl C. Nicholson, 32, Cloverdale, was housed at the jail on an out-of-county warrant.

Saturday

• At 6:43 p.m. Cathleen O. Crowe, 37, Terre Haute, was booked in for possession of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine.

• At 10:07 a.m. Wilson H. May III, 39, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail for criminal trespass.

Friday

• At 8:36 p.m. Ray D. Robinson, 53, Oklahoma City, Okla., was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated.

Thursday

• At 9:13 p.m. Samuel M. Cole, 47, Cloverdale, was housed at the jail for strangulation and domestic battery.

• At 3:46 p.m. Matthew J. Finley, 39, Greencastle, was booked in for theft and nonsupport of a dependent.

• At 3:28 p.m. Brent L. Wallace, 36, Spencer, was lodged at the jail for possession of marijuana.

• At 1:55 p.m. Charles W. Green, 39, Fillmore, was housed at the jail for theft and on a local warrant.

City Police

One recent arrest was reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 10:24 a.m. Sunday, Elizabeth Schick, 28, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Brad Hiatt.

Taken into custody on Roan Court, Schick was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on a Tippecanoe County warrant for failure to appear.

One recent summons was issued by city officers.

• At 9:40 p.m. March 29, Erin Caine, 37, Greencastle, was stopped at State Road 240 and Warren Drive by Officer Jared McDaniel.

Caine was issued a summons into court for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.

Five recent traffic accidents were reported by GPD officers.

• At 9:53 a.m. Friday, a two-vehicle mishap was reported on East Franklin near Durham Street.

Officer Hiatt said Harbhajan Bajwa, 63, Plainfield, was westbound onto Franklin Street, driving a 2010 Toyota Camry when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him as he approached Durham Street.

Meanwhile, Kevin Petty, 50, Quincy, had stopped at the stopsign and attempted to turn right onto Franklin Street when his 2017 Chevrolet Silverado was collided with the Bajwa vehicle. Petty said he never saw the oncoming Camry.

Total damage in the accident was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 12:37 p.m. Wednesday, a two-vehicle accident occurred on Bloomington Street near Tennessee Street.

Reta Pearson, 83, Greencastle, told Officer Darrel Bunten she was exiting the west side of Jackson’s Double Decker restaurant, turning onto Bloomington Street when her vision was obscured by a large parked dually pickup in the lot. She said she did not see a southbound 2019 Freightliner semi, driven by Ronald Williams Jr., 39, El Paso, and pulled her 2017 Jeep Cherokee into its path.

Impact sent the Pearson vehicle spinning back into the parking lot and onto Tennessee Street.

Total damage was listed at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 2:14 p.m. March 29, a two-vehicle accident was reported on South Locust Street near Seminary Street.

Maria Swenson, 49, Greencastle, was northbound on Locust, driving a 2018 Ford Ecosport, when Carolyn Strahl, 81, Greencastle, reportedly failed to stop at the intersection and her 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck the Swenson vehicle.

Total damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

Swenson was medically cleared by Putnam County EMS.

• At 12:45 p.m. March 29, a two-vehicle mishap occurred on East Franklin Street near Arlington Street.

Unfamiliar with the intersection, Megan Palm, 38, Brazil, thought it was a three-way stop and pulled her 2008 Honda Odyssey into the path of a 2007 Ford Freestyle, driven by David Brown, 66, Greencastle, who was eastbound on Franklin Street.

Total damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:55 a.m. March 29, a two-vehicle collision was reported on North College Avenue near East Franklin Street.

Tammy Bonifacius, 50, Greencastle, was southbound on College and passed through the Franklin Street intersection when his 2017 Nissan Ultima was struck by a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Brian Hubbard, 27, Greencastle.

Hubbard said he stopped at the stopsign but did not initially see any cross traffic.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 10:53 p.m. on Saturday, Kadan B. Burris, 16, Greencastle, was traveling on County Road 275 East in a 2004 Ford Mustang when a deer jumped into his path.

Burris told Deputy Robert Soilleux he swerved to miss a deer and drove off the side of the road and into a field.

Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:18 p.m. on Saturday, Michelle D. Alleyn, 51, Fillmore, was traveling on U.S. 231 in a 2014 Hyundai Tucson.

Alleyn told Deputy Soilleux she slowed down to let a deer cross and as she started to go, the deer ran back into the road and hit the front passenger side of the vehicle.

Soilleux estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 10:08 a.m. on Friday, Douglas Clodfelter, 62, Brazil, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado. Patrick Nesbit, 77, Greenwood, was also eastbound in a 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

Clodfelter told Deputy Tanner Brown he was slowing down due to a car in front of him stopped for a flagger. He said he was almost stopped when he noticed Nesbit’s vehicle in his rear-view, approaching and not stopping.

Clodfelter said that before impact, he accelerated to minimize the impact, but still came to a stop before hitting the car in front of him.

Nesbit told Brown the sun was in his eyes a little and when he glanced up, it was too late to stop. He said he did not brake prior to impact.

Nesbit’s vehicle was towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Kyla Burnham, 35, Fillmore, was northbound on County Road 700 East, approaching the stop at the intersection with Heritage Drive in a 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe. Debbie Weddle, 61, Coatesville, was westbound on Heritage Drive.

Burnham told Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle she had looked both directions and believed it to be clear to proceed, but she pulled into the path of Weddle’s vehicle.

Rozelle estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to six dispatches:

• At 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, GFD received a call from 98 Briarwood Ct. for a malfunctioning fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 4:34 and repaired the alarm. GFD went back into service at 4:58 p.m.

• At 9:22 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 1156 Avenue D for a recreational burn. Firefighters arrived at 9:30 and informed the homeowner of the city burn ordinance. The fire was not extinguished. GFD went back into service at 9:43 p.m.

• At 2:49 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a structure fire at 12 Highland St. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:55 and requested a box alarm. The fire originated in the kitchen and was under control by 3:14 p.m. Overhaul was performed, and GFD went back into service at 4:49 p.m.

• At 5:23 p.m. on Sunday, GFD went to 132 Berry St. for a recreational burn. Firefighters arrived at 5:26 and approved the burn, but advised of the city burn ordinance. GFD went back into service at 5:33 p.m.

• 5:34 p.m. on Sunday, GFD went to 1020 S. Jackson St. for a recreational burn. Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and determined that the fire did not comply with the city burn ordinance. The fire was extinguished, and GFD went back into service at 6:07 p.m.

• At 7 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 510 S. Indiana St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 7:04 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 7:20 p.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed four medical assists.
