Clean City Week 2021 to get under way Wednesday

Monday, April 19, 2021

From April 22 to May 2, the community will celebrate Clean City, an initiative spearheaded by the Greencastle Civic League in partnership with the City of Greencastle and numerous other community organizations and businesses. The goal of the initiative is to bring people together to make our city clean, welcoming and inviting to local residents, businesses and visitors.

A hallmark event of Clean City is Dumpster Day, this year taking place Saturday, April 24 from 8 a.m. – noon. Residents within the city limits of Greencastle are invited to dispose of household and yard waste on this day, free of charge with proof of residency and Greencastle utility service.

Household waste can be disposed in dumpsters located at the Greencastle High School, lower parking lot at 910 E Washington St.. Yard waste can be disposed of at the West Central Solid Waste District’s Yard Waste Drop Off Site at 2363 S. C.R. 250 West. Allowable yard waste includes including bags of grass or leaves, bundles of twigs less than fur feet in length, and cut-up firewood. Non-zllowable yard waste includes stumps, sod, soil or building materials, or branches and tree limbs more than 8 imches in diameter.

Members of the community were invited to propose their own projects, leading to more than a dozen projects putting mulch in community playgrounds, picking up trash in parks, downtown streets, and along roadsides.

Other groups are removing invasive plants, leading educational programs about community gardening, and exchanging plants and seeds. Participating businesses, organizations, and community groups include: the City of Greencastle, Jack’s Trash Service, West Central Solid Waste District, the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department, DePauw University, the Putnam County Public Library, FC Tucker Advantage Realtors, the Greencastle NAACP and DePauw Sustainability, Friends of the Park of Putnam County, Peace Lutheran Church, Main Street Greencastle and the Greencastle Civic League.

At the heart of the Clean City initiative, organizers see this as a way for members of the community to come together to say, “we care about where we live.” Many of the projects welcome volunteers to get involved. Details about all the projects, including organizers, days and times can be found on the Greencastle Civic League website.

The Greencastle Civic League’s mission is to improve life in Greencastle through beautification and clean-up projects, cultural development and the arts. This mission has remained unchanged since its founding 35 years ago and the organization remains confident that the collaboration and excitement it has seen around Clean City Day, not to mention around Park Fest and other activities, will ensure a continued presence in this community for the next 35 years.

More information about the day can be found on the Greencastle Civic League’s website at http://greencastlecivicleague.org/. Questions about yard waste and household trash disposal can be directed to Greencastle City Hall, 848-1515.
