CLOVERDALE — No one was injured following a fire at Midwest Calcium Carbonates that called out area fire departments Thursday evening.

At about 9:30 p.m., the Cloverdale Township, Jefferson Township, Reelsville, Cataract and Poland volunteer fire departments, as well as the Greencastle Fire Department, were toned out to the quarry for a commercial box alarm.

Cloverdale responded with two engines and a tanker, while Greencastle responded with an engine and its tower. Meanwhile, Jefferson Township, Reelsville, Cataract and Poland each responded with a tanker. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police also had a presence.

The fire was contained to a burner. Meanwhile, the facility had been evacuated before machinery was shut down and the burner was cooled off. There was concern with chemicals and a 10,000-gallon diesel fuel tank in the area of the fire.

Cloverdale Fire Chief Kerry Shepherd told the Banner Graphic that most of the fire crews were on standby as Cloverdale crews emptied their engines and tanker, while Reelsville emptied its tanker into Cloverdale’s. As such, GFD’s tower was not needed.

Shepherd said that about 5,000 gallons of water were used to cool down the inside of the burner.

Cloverdale crews cleared the scene at about midnight Friday morning.

Shepherd told the Banner Graphic that the exact cause for the fire was undetermined. As such, overall damages have also not been determined.
