Brazil Concert Band 2021 finale set Sunday at Forest Park

BRAZIL — The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew Huber, will present its grand finale on Sunday, Aug. 29 in Forest Park, rain or shine.

The final concert for the band’s 2021 season will begin at the special time of 7:30 p.m. complete with an intermission.

New to the BCB is “Curtain Call” by John Wasson, which will feature every section of the band in a comic vaudeville setting.

The performance will include “From Tropic to Tropic” by Russell Alexander, “La belle Hélène” by Jaques Offenbach in an arrangement by Jim Mahaffey and “Galop from Genevieve de Brabant,” also by Offenbach and edited by Col. John R. Bourgeois.

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber will be from “Jesus Christ Superstar” arranged by Henry Mancini, including “Superstar,” “Everything’s Alright,” “King Herod’s Song” and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.”

Marches by John Philip Sousa will include “The Gridiron Club,” “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

From Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” will be “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “‘Til There Was You,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” “Lida Rose” and “Marian the Librarian” arranged by Philip Lang.

Member John Camp will also conduct his latest march, “The Brazil Concert Band,” written in memory of the late Buz Burgess, who played trombone in the Brazil Concert Band and directed it in the 1960s.

“Hollywood Milestones,” arranged by John Higgins, will highlight several favorite movie music themes. Also by Higgins will be numbers from “Annie” with “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard Knock Life” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You.”

The patriotic medley “Songs of the Great War” arranged by Andrew Glover includes “Over There” and will be dedicated to veterans throughout American history.

An early Christmas present from the Brazil Concert Band will be “A Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson.

The Jackson Township Community Band will perform on Friday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bowling Green Old Settlers’ picnic on the town square.
