James Vernon Birt

James Vernon Birt, 90, of Greencastle, passed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021 in the Hendricks Regional Hospital in Danville.

Born Dec. 29, 1930 in Greencastle, he was the son of James Edward Birt and Mae Tecumseh Surber Birt.

He married Hope Ericksen and she survives.

James worked as a railroad telegrapher for the Monon Railroad. He then worked as a chemical analyst with Lone Star Industries.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greencastle. He was a woodworker, loved to garden and was an avid bee keeper. James was also a Boy Scout Master while his sons were in scouts. Both became Eagle Scouts.

Other survivors include his sons, Eric (Judi) Birt of Greencastle and Aaron (Julie) Birt of Carmel; grandchildren Michelle (Alex) Kruse of Lebanon, Jennifer (Brent) Sisk of San Diego, Andrew Birt of Greencastle, Grayson Birt of Carmel and Samantha Birt of Carmel; great-grandchildren Piper Birt of Greencastle and Addison Kruse of Lebanon; in addition to several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Greencastle with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.
