County Jail

Nine people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 11:16 p.m. Sherri V. Alexander, 33, Indianapolis, was lodged at the jail for trafficking with an inmate.

• At 7:06 p.m. Justin S. Walsh, 35, Ladoga, was taken into custody for unlawful possession of a syringe, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia with a prior conviction and driving with a suspended license.

• At 12:58 p.m. Samantha R. Hunter, 32, Greencastle, was booked in for auto theft and theft.

Friday

• At 9:44 p.m. Frederick N. Branam, 65, Reelsville, was housed at the jail on a warrant.

• At 6:31 p.m. Elizabeth L. Schick, 29, Reelsville, was booked in for counterfeiting and theft.

Thursday/i>

• At 2:42 p.m. Joshua S. Hunter, 20, Cloverdale, was lodged at the jail for reckless driving, criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement.

• At 11:53 a.m. Terrie Jo Crabtree, 55, Cloverdale, was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

• At 11:19 a.m. Jeffrey A. Debruler, 30, Indianapolis, was housed at the jail for probation violation.

• At 11:15 a.m. Dylan G. L. Mowery, 24, Brazil, was booked in for unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a property-damage crash.

City Police

One recent arrest was reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 6:14 p.m. Sunday, Angel E. Crawford, 49, Waveland, was arrested at Shoe Sensation in Putnam Plaza.

Taken into custody by Officer Angela Taylor, Crawford is facing charges of criminal trespass, resisting law enforcement and possession of a controlled substance.

She was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

• At 10:09 p.m. Friday, Charles L. Spiker, 41, Springfield, Ill., was arrested by Officer Luke Brown and lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

Spiker was taken into custody for driving with a suspended license with a prior conviction and on a Clay County warrant for failure to appear in court on a possession of marijuana charge.

A passenger in Spiker’s vehicle, Troy Shonkwiler, 45, Greencastle, was issued a summons for possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

One additional summons was issued by Sgt. Brad Hiatt.

• At 10:36 p.m. Sunday, Shawn Weston, 20, Greencastle, was stopped on Washington Street and issued a summons into court on a charge of possession of marijuana.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:17 p.m. on Sunday, Branagan E. Reece, 21, Monticello, was southbound on County Road 200 West approaching U.S. 40 in a 2016 Ford Focus. Jennifer M. Cordell, 45, Terre Haute, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2020 Nissan Versa.

Reece told Deputy Hunter Gambill she did not see Cordell’s vehicle approaching and pulled across the westbound lanes in an attempt to turn east.

Cordell told Gambill that Reece pulled out in front of her and that her left headlight and bumper struck the rear driver’s side of Reece’s vehicle.

Reece estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, Chastine D. Shillings, 33, Greencastle, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 2015 Chrysler 200 when she hit a deer.

The car had to be towed. Reserve Deputy Josh Clark estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 4 a.m. on Saturday, Travis G. Gray, 32, Fillmore, was traveling on U.S. 231 in a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu.

Gray told Deputy Hunter Gambill he had been southbound but could not remember crashing.

Gambill’s investigation determined that Gray had traveled left of center, across the northbound lane and into the ditch. The vehicle was observed in the ditch facing east.

Upon the arrival of first responders, Gray was found to be bleeding from the head and arms, complaining of pain.

He admitted to officers he had been consuming alcohol but refused to submit to a certified blood test.

Putnam County EMS transported Gray to Putnam County Hospital for his injuries.

He was booked in the Putnam County Jail at 9:41 a.m. for driving while intoxicated-refusal.

The car was towed. Gambill estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 9:29 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, a 2004 Nissan 350 registered to John Ellis, 50, Coatesville, was found crashed into a barbed wire fence along County Road 725 East.

A witness reported to driving up on the crash vehicle in the ditch and observing a person getting into a truck and leaving the scene.

Deputy Robert Soilleux reported that based on tire marks, the vehicle was northbound when it lost control, skidded sideways across the centerline and into the ditch, where it crashed into the barbed wire fence and snapped off several fence posts before coming to rest.

While Ellis was listed as the driver in Soilleux’s accident report, no charges were listed.

The car was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to six recent incidents:

• At 7:54 p.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to ResCare Community Living for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 8 p.m. and found the alarm system was indicating that a pull alarm had been activated, but it could not be found. The system was reset. GFD went back into service at 8:18 p.m.

• At 4:12 p.m. on Friday, GFD received a call from a neighbor complaining that hazardous material was being burned at 1934 Dunbar Heights Dr. Firefighters arrived at 4:19 and found the homeowner had a small non-hazardous fire in the front yard. GFD went back into service at 4:35 p.m.

• At 6:04 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 846 E. Washington St. for a possible structure fire. Firefighters arrived at 6:08 and found that the homeowner was grilling. GFD went back into service at 6:17 p.m.

• At 10:02 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Beta Theta Pi on the DePauw University campus for a smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:04 and determined the alarm was due to smoking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 10:13 p.m.

• At 6 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to 410 S. Indiana St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 6:04 and could not determine a cause for the alarm. The detector head was cleaned and the alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 6:18 p.m.

• At 10:01 a.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 607 Albin Pond Rd., for an unauthorized burn. Firefighters arrived at 10:06 and found three untended fires in the front yard. The homeowner was advised of the city burn ordinance and the fires were extinguished. GFD went back into service at 10:24 a.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed nine medical assists.
