The DePauw University School of Music will welcome guest artist Arcomusical for a Communiversity Concert on Tuesday, Sept 21.

The Communiversity series brings in guests of all backgrounds and styles to give educational concerts at Music on the Square, the School of Music’s community space at the corner of Indiana and Franklin streets on the Putnam County Courthouse Square.

This year DePauw is welcoming Projeto Arcomusical, a sextet that uses chamber music as a conduit for reimagine the berimbau, an Afro-Brazilian instrument consisting of a string stretched across a bowed piece of wood.

Arcomusical was formed in 2013 with the mission to spread awareness of the musical bow, an instrument family that includes the berimbau. Its activities include performance, education, composition, publication, research and community engagement.

Speaking of the performance group, Projeto Arcomusical, August Read Thomas, professor of composition at the University of Chicago, reported that “Arcomusical’s music making is elegant, colorful, bold, vibrant, inspiring and centered.” They have released two albums and performed at universities across the United States. In 2019, they performed alongside the Arizona State University Orchestra to premiere Elliot Cole’s Roda Grande, a concerto for six berimbau.

While at DePauw, the ensemble will be speaking with classes and leading a master class in addition to giving a Communiversity Concert that will take place at 7:30 p.m. and will be open to everyone. Tickets are available at depauw.edu/music and masks will be required at this event.
