Nearly 5 inches of rain reported on Greencastle’s East Side
While September isn’t traditionally part of the rainy season in central Indiana, 2021 might prove to be an outliar with almost five inches of rain falling on Greencastle’s East Side recently.
Officially, EMA Public Information Officer Russ Evans reported that 4.9 inches of rain has fallen on the East Side of Greencastle since Saturday.
By comparison, a typical September sees a total of 3.14 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service Indianapolis office.
The year-to-date average for rainfall in central Indiana is 36.38 inches. Locally the gauges are lagging behind at approximately 31 inches through Aug. 31.
That comes after the area saw 7.51 inches of rain in June, 6.34 in July and just 1.99 inches in August, according to National Weather Service figures.
Locally the extremes for September include a maximum of 10.37 inches in 2003, fueled by a more-than-seven-inch deluge on Sept. 1, 2003.
The minimum rainfall for any September in Central Indiana was experienced in 2020 when just 0.12 inches of rain was recorded while most of us were quarantining inside.
The average annual rainfall in central Indiana is 43.63 inches.
Greencastle wasn’t the only area with substantial rain recently.
Over the period Sept. 21-23, Martinsville got 4.34 inches, Plainfield 3.51, Spencer 3.50, Crawfordsville 2.90, Cloverdale 2.47 and Reelsville 1.80.
