Walls in Putnam County sought for new murals

The mural on the S&W Feed Center silos made quite the splash when it was unveiled two years ago, but the Putnam County Mural Project is looking for new spots to beautify Putnam County.

The Putnam County Mural Project is working on its next mural project and wants the public’s help in identifying possible “canvases” across the county.

The group, which facilitated the silo mural at the corner of U.S. 231 and Veterans Memorial Highway in Greencastle, will host a festival that will include multiple mural sites around Putnam County next August.

“We’re excited about building upon our initial project and the network of murals across the county,” said Chris Flegal, who leads the volunteer group. “We have identified a few walls we think would make fantastic canvases, and we want to hear from residents all across the county about where they would like to see a mural.

“Our goal is to create a catalog of walls in Putnam County that are accessible to everyone, and where the owners are interested in having their wall become a canvas for a local, regional or international artist,” he added.

Some of those walls will be considered for the mural festival, while others would be considered for future projects.

The group is interested in a variety of wall sizes in a variety of locations around the county. If selected to proceed, owners would complete a five-year easement agreement to allow access to the site during installation and any future repair work if needed. Eventually, the selections for walls would be based on their location, their condition, alignment with the group’s mission and public accessibility.

To include a wall for consideration for future mural projects, fill out a form at www.putnamcountymuralproject.org. Only those who own the property should complete the form.
