When some parents were concerned about their children’s safety walking to school, they expressed their concerns.

And on Monday, local leaders made something happen for them.

With a number of students crossing Veterans Highway at Percy L. Julian Drive, right next to Greencastle Middle School, a crossing guard is now in place to ensure the safety of the young people.

When the issue was brought to Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin, he took it to Mayor Bill Dory, and a plan began to take shape.

After the two city leaders conferred with Supt. Jeff Gibboney, GMS Principal Scott Weltz and school board member Ed Wilson, who also happens to be a GPD sergeant, the decision was made to move the crossing guard at Ridpath Primary School to the busy crossing beside GMS.

“Our crossing guard who was at Ridpath all last year and the beginning of this year had not had any students cross in the crossing zone,” Sutherlin said. “So it made sense to pull that one and put that individual here.”

The guard, David Thomas, agreed to give it a try.

He spent Monday morning and afternoon waiting, with students, for the crossing signals to change before walking out with his stop sign for an added layer of protection for the student pedestrians.

One area of concern is that even when the north-south traffic has a stop sign, it is possible to make a legal right turn form the north, across the crosswalk.

“We’ve educated the students this afternoon and I’ve talked to our crossing guard that you have to make sure that nobody is making a right turn as you step out there,” Sutherlin said.

Motorists in the area are urged to use extra caution when they are in the area of any school during the day, but particularly at the beginning and end of the school day.

I still think a pedestrian bridge or tunnel is the the better move.

  • @DPR--Maybe in your infinite wisdom you could figure out how to pay for the bridge or tunnel?

  • Student safety have a price point? Where does student safety rank in budget priority? What waste in the budget could be moved to a walkway? Could a public/ private partnership build it? Could advertising on the walkway help provide the maintenance? Could a bridge be a community asset? Create more walking and/ or biking (health and climate friendly) opportunity from the south side of the parkway to the park, school, and downtown?

  • You pay for a bridge or tunnel the same way every other city does, through taxes. One at the Jr. High is needed as well as one on S. Jackson for the students headed for Black Stock.

  • Why not have a bond issue for voters to decide on to raise money for special projects???

  • Our older folks doing the crossing guard jobs do an excellent job and no bridge is needed. Other things need to be done-like pave 231 around court house to the tracks going out of town. Someone is going to fall thru that road-with the extra weight our gov is going to allow trucks to carry- it probably be a semi but that might be how we get it paved.

DON ANTONIO - well between the two a bridge would be cheaper and easier overall, so let's just take the tunnel off the table. (Which is a shame b/c tunnels are pretty cool.)

Now, to pay for the pedestrian bridge you would likely apply tax money. While I too am one for scrutinizing every dime spent by government, it is a pretty easy sell as a taxpayer-funded project. The city could also likely get state funds (yeah, more tax money) to help pay for it.

Or... if you really wanted to do it right, you could sell naming rights to the bridge to fund it over time, and eventually make money on it.

I will give 'em $100 towards the project right now if I get to name the bridge!

Oh, and thank you for recognizing my wisdom, finite as it is. ;)

FORGIVE ME - I have been telling the world for some time now that they need to put a pedestrian bridge over Jackson St. (This is part of my overall TRUCK ROUTE plan.)
