Family Support Services launching Supportive Housing initiative

Thursday, October 7, 2021

Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for victims and families that Family Support Services of West Central Indiana serves.

Many victims face homelessness when they flee their abusive home seeking a safer environment. Their experiences are confounded by economic instability, often perpetuated by abusers.

Through funding provided by the State of Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, FSSWCI will be launching a Supportive Housing program, providing safe, affordable housing, counseling, and supportive services for families who have fled abusive relationships at locations in Putnam, Parke and Clay Counties. Advocates will work closely with clients to define and plan their educational, financial, and job-related goals and then work with property owners to establish homes for them and their families. Survivors are provided with financial assistance for rent and utilities and have access to all the resources and programs at Family Support Services of West Central Indiana.

“We are extremely excited to provide another tool for our advocates to support the victims and survivors we serve,” Victims Services Program Director Elizabeth Butts said. “Housing remains a top concern for individuals fleeing an abusive relationship. This initiative will allow us to provide the support they need.”

Supportive Housing includes:

• Rental assistance with a monthly subsidy based on individual income for individuals within active case management.

• Financial workshops and life skills education.

• An individualized safety and service plan to meet the needs of the survivor and their family.

• Access to FSSWCI case management and support groups, legal advocacy, mentoring programs, and more.

“This initiative is going to address a huge hole in our services,” Executive Director Scott Monnett said. “We have tremendous housing partners we have worked with for years, but the need in our communities for adequate and affordable housing is great, creating a huge demand and limited resources. Our team will now know that we can provide immediate shelter for those we are serving as the need arises when it arises. We are thankful to ICJI for supporting this initiative and look forward to working with the Community, donors, business partners, and other agencies to sustain and grow this into the future.”

There will be opportunities for individuals and businesses to support this initiative through furnishing and decorating the apartments, providing household supplies and resources and more.

If you would like to learn more or have a property that you would like to be considered for this initiative, contact Monnett at 653-4820, ext. 101 or email scott.monnett@pcfss.net.
