No textbook fees at Area 30 this year

With an empty building this week due to fall break, the Area 30 board of directors nonetheless conducted its monthly business meeting Tuesday morning.

The brief meeting featured a handful of updates from the career center’s administrators to the member superintendents.

Executive Director Lora Busch reported that there will be no textbook fees for Area 30 students in the 2021-22 school year.

“Area 30 will not be contacting your schools regarding textbook fees,” Busch said. “We were able to cover the cost of those again this year.”

Busch also presented a copy of the proposed master contract for Area 30 instructors to the superintendents, noting that Area 30 is asking that salaries be equal to the average salaries at the five member schools — Cloverdale, Eminence, Greencastle, North Putnam and South Putnam.

Along with this, Area 30 has also proposed a new payscale for program assistants.

Both matters will be voted upon at a later date.

Assistant Director Chad Nunley reported that a bus inspection with the Indiana State Police took place on Sept. 14, with all Area 30 buses passing and only some minor repairs needed.

The board gave its approval to hire Marcia Nees as the part-time, temporary clinical assistant for the nursing program.

Nees is a retired licensed practical nurse with 20 years of experience at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Finally, Busch was excited to report on the success of Sept. 25 golf scramble, during which the Area 30 Scholarship Fund raised $12,375, with some funds still trickling in.

“At the end you say, I can’t believe we did that with a small group of people and made that much money,” Busch said.

The director was also pleased to report that the school has a rate of absences related to COVID-19 lingering around four percent, well below state requirements.

Joining Busch, Nunley and corporation treasurer Cindy Burnham in person were Eminence Supt. Wesley Hammond and Greencastle Supt. Jeff Gibboney, with Cloverdale’s Greg Linton and South Putnam’s Corey Smith attending virtually.

The next meeting of the Area 30 board will be at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9 in the boardroom at Area 30.
