With a goal of “keeping Greencastle beautiful,” Greencastle Heavy Trash Day is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, the City Council learned at its October meeting.

City of Greencastle trash customers are invited to dispose of trash and large waste items free of charge, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Greencastle High School main parking lot, 910 E. Washington St. Customers must enter off East Washington Street.

Customers will be expected to unload their own vehicles. However, help will be provided for those not physically able to unload.

The service is only for city trash customers, who have received a letter in the mail recently detailing what items can be disposed of and how many.

The heavy trash program, more recently being held twice a year in spring and fall, has become a good thing, City Clerk-Treasurer Lynda Dunbar noted and has “helped keep mattresses and TVs out of the ditches.”

Clean City Day is free of charge with proof of residency, a copy of a utility bill or possession of the flyer customers received by mail.

Items that will be accepted are:

-- Household furniture, mattresses, large toys, small appliances, large appliances (limit one), microwaves and television sets (limit two).

-- Carpeting tied in three-foot bundles.

-- Small (limited) amounts of construction debris. No contractor, business or remodeling companies are permitted.

-- Automobile tires (limit four). No tractor or large equipment tires accepted.

Meanwhile, electronics can be disposed of at the Greencastle Middle School parking lot by the West Central Solid Waste District. Vehicles must enter off Percy Julian Drive.

Accepted at the middle school will be:

-- Computer monitors/towers, laptops, printers, scanners, keyboards, cables, modems, iPad/tablets, stereo systems, radios, MP3 players, DVD/VHS players, CD players, camcorders, fax machines, table-top copiers, blenders, toasters, telephones/cellphones, answering machines, gaming systems, chargers and digital cameras.

No yard waste will be accepted at high school site (the Yard Waste Site will be open 9:15 a.m.-noon. Saturday at 2362 S CR 250 West (location by the County Highway Department), and will be of no charge to Greencastle trash customers that day.

TVs “will be a little tricky,” Clerk Dunbar said. “City residents can get free disposal of a TV by coming through the utility office at City Hall to get a ticket on Friday.”
