City Police

Two recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Delmer Yakel, 20, Brazil, was arrested by Officer Nick Eastham.

Arrested on the parking lot of The Space Place off Tennessee Street, Yakel was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

• At 11:28 p.m. Oct. 19, Charles Bentley, 30, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Luke Brown.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of reckless driving and possession of paraphernalia, Bentley was taken into custody at Bloomington and Block streets.

Bentley was also issued citations for false or fictitious registration and operating with an expired plate (Feb. 21, 2021).

City officers issued one other recent citation and one summons.

• At 1:48 a.m. Thursday, Tanner Wilson, 26, Brazil, was cited by Reserve Officer David Clodfelter.

Stopped near the bowling alley, Wilson was ticketed for 60 mph in a 40-mph zone.

• At 5:50 a.m. Oct. 22, Tyler Witt, 19, Greencastle, was issued a summons by Officer Alec Pettit.

Stopped on Locust Street, Witt was cited for possession of marijuana.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Phillip J. Dooley, 29, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 50 South in a 2001 Subaru Legacy when he hit a deer.

Deputy Daniel Birt estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:41 a.m. on Wednesday, Tawnya S. Whittington, 49, Terre Haute, was eastbound on U.S. 36, approaching County Road 775 West in a 2018 Ford Fusion when she hit a deer.

The car had to be towed. Cpl. Brian Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 6:59 a.m. on Wednesday, Shelby A. Hilton, 17, Coatesville, was westbound on U.S. 36 east of County Road 300 East in a 2007 Honda Accord when she hit a deer.

The car was towed. Cpl. Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 10:40 p.m. on Sunday, Lisa K. Benton, 44, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse.

As she drove, a limb blew out of a tree and hit the vehicle, causing cosmetic damage to the headlights, grille and hood, but major damage to the windshield.

Deputy Birt noted that it was extremely windy at the time and the road was covered in sticks that had been blown out of trees.

Benton told Birt she was only a short drive from home and would follow a relative to the house.

Birt estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 8 p.m. on Saturday, Tabatha N. Slicer, 24, Quincy, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2016 Ford Edge when she hit a deer.

Deputy Birt estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to three recent incidents:

• GFD responded to two consecutive incidents at the apartments at 330 Greenwood Ave.:

— At 7:42 p.m., on Wednesday, GFD responded for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 7:44 and determined the alarm was accidental. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 7:54 p.m.

— At 2:41 a.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:44 and determined the alarm was accidental. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 2:55 a.m.

• At 10:54 a.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a motor-vehicle accident with injuries on U.S. 231 near County Road 350 South. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 10:59 and cleaned debris from the roadway. GFD went back into service at 11:06 a.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed eight medical assists.
