DePauw Theatre, in conjunction with the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the DePauw Women’s Center, is hosting a series of events from Nov. 11-21 that celebrate women in science — and the integration of the arts into science, technology, engineering and math (or STEM).

Most of these events are free of charge, and all are open to the public.

The celebration will culminate in DePauw Theatre’s performances of “Silent Sky,” an award-winning play about the real-life women astronomers at Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s who, despite legal and societal restrictions, made profound discoveries that forever changed the field of astronomy.

As part of the STE-A-M events, McKim Observatory in Greencastle will be open to the public from Thursday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 20 from 7-9 p.m.

STE-A-M events will commence on Thursday, Nov. 11 with a talk by Mary Kertzman, astrophysicist and professor of physics and astronomy, titled “The Women, the Stars and the Science of Silent Sky” at the Music on the Square building, across from the Courthouse, from 6-7 p.m., followed by a presentation at the historic McKim observatory at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

On Monday, Nov. 15, Kertzman will host a screening of the award-winning film “Hidden Figures: at 7 p.m. in Watson Forum, The Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media, DePauw. This event also is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, Nov. 17, DePauw Theatre and the Department of Physics and Astronomy will host a noon time celebration of “The Arts + STEM = STE-A-M” that will feature exhibits that integrate science and art, including music, poetry readings by Professor Alex Komives and exhibits of geoscience and astrophotography.

Participants also may explore a “pop-up planetarium” in the Great Hall. Light refreshments will be provided. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Green Center for the Performing Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

Beginning on Thursday, Nov. 18 and running through Sunday, Nov. 21, DePauw Theatre will present the “Silent Sky,” by Lauren Gunderson, in Moore Theatre of the Green Center for the Performing Arts. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21.

Admission is $5 for students and $10 for adults.

The public is invited to come meet those fierce and funny women who charted the stars.
