NEW MAYSVILLE — A local cemetery was vandalized over the weekend, with nearly 20 gravestones toppled in the process.

While on patrol Saturday morning, Cpl. Brian Helmer of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office discovered that several gravestones at the New Maysville Cemetery had been vandalized overnight.

In total, 18 of the headstones had been knocked down.

Fortunately the groundskeeper for the graveyard was able to remount all headstones with minimal actual damage.

Anyone with any information regarding any suspect(s) in this incident is urged to come forward. There may have been other acts of vandalism committed by the same suspect(s) overnight.

Anyone who observed anything suspicious or who has possible video footage is encouraged to send a private message at www.facebook.com/PCSDSheriff that will then get relayed to Cpl. Helmer.

  • To follow up, there was actually significant damage done. Mostly in the older cemetery on the north side of the roadway. About 15-20 tablet type stones were pushed over and broken, several in multiple pieces. This will require extensive repairs which will run in the thousands.

  • This is very sad. I hate to hear of all the vandalism such as the cemetary and all the stuff at Bainbridge Elementary.

  • To reset those headstones requires equipment, time and hard work. To minimize the vandalism by saying there was "minimal actual damage" gives the impression that the action was not a big deal. It will require extensive effort and cost to reset the heavy, obelisk headstones and for anyone who tries to repair the broken tablet stones.

  • I remember about 50 years back some teens did this at the Roachdale Cemetery. When caught the teens not only had to make restitution but the Judge took their license and ordered them to walk to and from school.
