Having read about the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter’s efforts to place wreaths on the graves of as many veterans as possible this season, a group of consumers at Putnam County Comprehensive Services decided to help.

PCCS employee Lisa Wagle recently reached out to Diana Brumfield, who serves as regent of the Washburn Chapter of the NSDAR, saying that a group of consumers had read a recent Banner Graphic story about the local chapter taking part in the DAR’s national Wreaths Across America effort.

The idea of Wreaths Across America is to sponsor as many wreaths as possible to cover veterans’ graves on the annual National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 18. Locally, the Washburn Chapter is focusing on Greencastle’s Forest Hill Cemetery.

While wreaths can be sponsored for $15 apiece, the consumers decided that this might be too much for their individual budgets. However, if they could each put in a dollar, they decided they could pool their money and sponsor several wreaths.

In the end, the PCCS consumers were able to team up to present Brumfield and fellow Washburn Chapter members Beverly Ross and Jinsie Bingham a check for $90, enough for six wreaths.

Brumfield was moved by the efforts of PCCS clients and the resourcefulness of pooling their funds.

“I had no idea nor did I expect that these wonderful people were also looking for ways to give what they could to our community,” Brumfield said. “I am all about serving via our individual time and talents, whatever they are.”

Putnam County Comprehensive Services (PCCS) was founded in 1968 by a group of parents who wished to create a program for their children underserved by or having left secondary education. The focus then was on vocational opportunities, adult daily living skills training and some social services to support families and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Today, PCCS provides services in 26 Indiana counties to more than 400 individuals and families, employing more than 500 people to provide services.
