Jalen Moore named to preseason Lou Henson award watch list

BOSTON, Mass. — Oakland junior point guard Jalen Moore has been named to the 2021-22 Lou Henson Award preseason watch list.

The award, which is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball, honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.

A season ago, Moore was selected to the 2020-21 Lou Henson Award mid-season watch list. The Cloverdale, Ind., native averaged 17.9 points, 8.4 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.7 steals en route to NABC All-District First Team honors and a spot on the Horizon League First Team. Moore led NCAA Division I in assists per game and total assists (252) while also tallying a team-leading 10 double-doubles, the most in the country by a player below 6-foot.

To add, Moore ranked second nationally in free throw makes (170), fourth nationally in triple-doubles (1), fifth nationally in minutes per game (37:50), and 23rd nationally in double-doubles (10). He recorded 18 points, 14 assists, and 11 rebounds against Detroit Mercy (1/22/21) for Oakland’s first triple-double since Kay Felder (3/29/16).

Moore is one of just four individuals from the Horizon League on the 50-player list.

Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.

The Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced in April 2022.
