Greencastle churches work together on Thanksgiving outreach meal

Monday, November 15, 2021

Having served separate meals previously, two Greencastle churches — with financial support from a third — will come together to serve Thanksgiving meals to the community this year.

Greencastle Christian Church and Gobin Church will serve Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25. Greencastle Presbyterian Church is also supporting the endeavor financially.

While the meal will be prepared at GCC, 620 Primrose Court, with ongoing COVID-19 concerns, it will be available only for pick-up or carry-out.

The partnership between the churches came about as a result of a missed connection in 2020.

The GCC meal finished up with some extra pies, rolls and other items, so Erin Sprinkle, who helms the effort at GCC, began trying to figure out if they could be donated to Gobin’s outreach meal.

No connection was made, but this spring, Sprinkle began inquiring about who does the Gobin meal, which led her to Tosh Everson.

“I reached out to LaToshia and she touched based with their team at Gobin,” Sprinkle said. “She said, ‘Yeah, we would love to do that, come together as a team, united and show people that churches can work together even though we’re two separate places.’ And maybe we could reach more people.

“You don’t see churches working together a whole bunch and I think it’s very cool that we come together and do this united,” she added.

For her part, Everson is ecstatic at something that brings together more than just one congregation.

“I know there are theological differences and all that, but I really wish we could have one church in this town. It’s not that big of a town,” Everson said. “But anytime we can come together for something for our ultimate mission, I think that’s a good thing.”

And so it will be on Thanksgiving.

GCC has also streamlined the way people can get involved, be it signing up for a meal, signing up to help on that day or to donate items like noodles or pies.

All of that can be done by filling out one of two forms at https://greencastlecc.org/thanksgiving-outreach-meal.

Those less technologically savvy may also call the church office at 653-5816.

“It’s been a really cool partnership,” Sprinkle said. “It’s been cool to work with somebody from another church organization and bring the two together.”
