Mary Frances ‘Frankie’ O’Neal

Mary Frances “Frankie” O’Neal, 86, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, at her residence with her daughter by her side.

Mary was born in Spencer on April 7, 1935, the daughter of Francis Hall and Mary Julia (Drescher) Jackson.

She was a 1953 graduate of Spencer High School. She married Wendel O’Neal on Dec. 22, 1955.

Mrs. O’Neal worked as an administrative assistant for the DePauw University chaplain for 30 years. She was also an administrative assistant for the Annual Fund and Development Office at DePauw. She worked with the president’s department on graduation day, helping students get ready for commencement. Mary met many dignitaries and famous people through these efforts and enjoyed working in this capacity. She retired in 1994.

Mary was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose. In high school, she was a varsity cheerleader and played saxophone for the marching band. Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed mystery and true crime books, especially James Patterson and Karin Slaughter books. She also enjoyed going to the casino.

Mary never met a stranger, and would do anything for anybody. Her love for people was extraordinary, and she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Kendall, and several nieces, nephews, and brother and sister-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wendel W. O’Neal; a sister, Emma Lou Miller; and her granddog, Jake.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Pastor Donnie Watson officiating.
