Andrew A.C. “Andy” Hertel, 99, of Roachdale, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2021.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1922 to the late Jacob A. and Donnis C. (Stevens) Hertel in Danville, Ill.

He first married Jenny Pearl Mount. He then married Edna “Gertrude” Roberts. They both preceded him in death.

Andy graduated from high school in 1941 and then went on to attend tool design school.

He was a lifetime farmer and farmed many acres in the Roachdale and North Salem areas.

He was a member of the Roachdale Christian Church since 1969 and served as a member of Gideons International. He was passionate about getting Bibles into as many hands as possible through the Gideons and delivered many messages in support of the ministry to churches in a large portion of Indiana.

He was active in a Bible Study through the Roachdale Christian Church who met with inmates at the Putnam County Jail every Saturday morning. Throughout the years they saw more than 250 souls saved and baptized. He was also active in an outreach at the Putnamville Correctional Facility where he was part of a support group for the inmates.

Andy is survived by his nephew, Richard Sears; two stepchildren, Patricia (Richard) Reed and Gary Roberts Sr.; grandchildren Richard Reed, Trudy Coffin, Sara (Shawn) Doyle, Scott Roberts, Gary Roberts Jr., Lori (Jeff) Pond, Mike (Wendy) Roberts, Troy Roberts and Melissa (John) Bosstick; 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents,; his sister, Charlena Sears; his wives and his stepson, Walter Roberts.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27 at Roachdale Christian Church, 1 N. Walnut St., Roachdale, with Pastor Phil Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in North Salem.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a time of visitation on Friday, Nov..26 from 4-7 p.m. at Servies & Morgan Funeral Home, 102 E. Washington St., Roachdale. They are also invited for a time of visitation at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Andy’s memory be made to Putnam County Gideons, P.O. Box 204, Greencastle, IN 46135.
