Study-abroad opportunities abound at DePauw

The opportunity for DePauw University students to study abroad has again been recognized by the Open Doors Report, which ranked DePauw among the top baccalaureate colleges in the country.

For the 2019-20 academic year, DePauw -- compared to other baccalaureate institutions -- was ranked:

-- No. 2 for short-term programs of three weeks or less, with 382 students participating.

-- No. 3 for undergraduate participation, at an estimated 115.6 percent, possible because some students participate more than once.

-- No. 4 in the number of students who studied abroad, 466.

“For more than 10 years DePauw has been recognized as a top-10 study abroad baccalaureate institution,” Mandy Brookins, associate dean of experiential learning and director of off-campus programs at the Hubbard Center for Student Engagement, said. “The Open Doors ranking recognizes that study abroad is fully integrated into the DePauw curriculum in a meaningful way.

“Faculty members design and lead unique and rigorous programs around the world that students are excited about,” Brookins added. “The portfolio of semester programs has been curated to meet the academic and professional goals of all students, regardless of their major. Students can participate without delaying graduation and use their financial aid and scholarships for a seamless experience.”

The number of American students who studied abroad during the 2019-20 academic year dropped significantly because of the pandemic-driven travel restrictions.

Brookins said many DePauw students were fortunate to experience their short-term programs during winter term in January 2020, before COVID-19 restrictions grounded them.
