Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated several recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:04 p.m. on Monday, Nancy J. Minardo, 63, Bainbridge, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2016 Ford Taurus. Lisa D. Dockery, 61, Plainfield, was westbound in a 2011 Dodge Caravan.

A deer entered Minardo’s path and she struck it, causing the animal to cross into the westbound lanes, where Dockery also struck it.

Deputy Josh Deal reported that both vehicles suffered only minor front-end damage and were driven from the scene. The deputy estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 1:56 p.m. on Monday, John Hunteman, 42, Brazil, was southbound on County Road 375 West in a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette.

Hunteman told Deputy Tanner Brown that he was in a curve when the car “got away” from him. He got the car back into his lane but lost control again and slid off the road sideways into a tree.

Brown reported that Hunteman did not have valid, updated insurance at the time of the crash.

The car was towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 11:35 a.m. on Monday, Anthony Coladata, 35, Indianapolis, was southbound, turning onto eastbound County Road 600 West in a 2005 Volvo VNL semi pulling a trailer loaded with scrapped vehicles. The tractor was registered to National Machinery and Conveyor, Marion, while the trailer was registered to Midtown Recycling, Indianapolis.

Coladata told Deputy Todd Hopkins that as he was braking for the turn, his front passenger side tire went off the road, which then caused the vehicle to travel onto the property of Deer Creek Fish and Wildlife Area, where it overturned onto the passenger side.

Coladata had an associate who was working up the road at Seniour’s Towing drive a front-end loader to the scene to try to remove the cargo. In the process of doing so, they began to cause damage to the Deer Creek property, leaving large ruts and tracks on the property. There was also damage to the road from the process of loading the vehicles.

Deputies contacted Deer Creek FWA Manager Scott McCormick regarding the damage.

Meanwhile, Coladata was cited for driving a commercial vehicle without a CDL as well as failure to provide financial responsibility.

The semi was towed. Hopkins, who was assisted at the scene by Cpl. Brian Helmer and Cpl. Scott Ducker, estimated damage at $50,000-$100,000.

• At 7 a.m. on Monday, Riley Jayne, 25, Greencastle, was attempting to jump start a 2012 Can Am Spyder in the parking lot of Putnamville Correctional Facility.

Jayne told Deputy Brown he had his foot on the brake and was turning the throttle when starting. He said the vehicle started and he let go of the throttle and brake, stepping back.

Jayne said the vehicle then started beeping and suddenly accelerated, traveling across the parking lot. He suspected that the throttle stuck.

The vehicle traveled about 125 yards across the parking lot before hitting another vehicle.

Jerd Cameron told Brown he was sitting in his 2014 GMC Sierra when he saw the Spyder traveling toward his vehicle head-on. He said he turned a little so that it struck the side of his truck. The first vehicle then came to a stop against a fence, causing no noticeable damage to the fence.

Jayne’s vehicle was towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 12:20 a.m. on Monday, Mark L. Priest, 62, Cloverdale, was southbound on County Road 900 East approaching a 90-degree turn onto County Road 850 South in a 2005 Chevrolet Express.

Priest told Deputy Robert Soilleux he was driving home on back roads and may have been going too fast and didn’t see the corner because of his dim headlights. The car left the road and drove into a cornfield.

Priest was discovered to be intoxicated and was booked in the jail later that morning for possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia with a prior conviction, driving while intoxicated and on a warrant.

Priest initially said he was not injured by later complained of back pain and was transported to the hospital.

The van was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
