Area 30 Board approves health science course, pay increases

Monday, December 13, 2021

Convening for a short session last Thursday, the Area 30 Board addressed a health science course and pay raises for Executive Director Lora Busch and Assistant Director Chad Nunley.

The board first approved to continue offering Health Science Education Special Topics 5286 as a career and technical education (CTE) course for the 2022-23 school year.

Busch noted that the course is for one year and meant for dual credit, rather than just toward a certification. She added that the course has to be taught either by a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse (LPN).

Busch also noted that the course is not being duplicated at Area 30’s sending school systems and that special topic classes are generally taken for students to be more rounded.

The course is to be synced with Next Level Programs of Study, and the board also approved a waiver to anticipate any possible changes with how it is designated by the state.

The board also approved pay increases for both Busch and Nunley. They will get raises of $6,140 to their base, with the reasoning being that they have not received raises since 2018.

The figure is based on raises to teachers’ base pay going back to 2019. For 2019-20 and 2020-21 each, they received $850 added to their base, while they received $4,400 for 2021-22.

Busch has served at Area 30 for 27 years, with Nunley having 29 years. Both currently have 260-day contracts.

Eminence Schools Superintendent Wesley Hammond was not in attendance at the meeting. Meanwhile, Treasurer Cindy Burnham joined Busch, Nunley and the rest of the board.

The next regular meeting of the Area 30 Board is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 9 a.m. in the Old National Trail boardroom.
