City accepting applications for park position until Jan. 20

Monday, December 20, 2021

With the new year in sight, the City of Greencastle is looking for candidates for its park director position.

At the November Park Board meeting, Park Director Rod Weinschenk announced his resignation, leaving the department on Nov. 27 -- 21 years to the day he began.

His replacement is officially a mayoral appointment, which Bill Dory has said will be selected with support of the Park Board.

At the December City Council meeting, Mayor Dory said the city would be posting the park superintendent opening, and one place that is occurring is in the classified ads on 11A in today’s Banner Graphic.

“We’re asking people to call or email us,” Dory said, noting that an application packet will be available at City Hall on the northeast corner of Washington and Locust streets.

The house that sits just to the north of the Bloomington Street entrance to Robe-Ann Park is owned by the city and has traditionally been provided to the park director as part of compensation for the position.

Councilman David Murray asked about the status of the old house, which has had it share of plumbing and other problems over the years.

“We haven’t been in it,” Mayor Dory responded, noting that Weinschenk had been given time to move into a new home. “Some people may want to purchase their own home in the community rather than live there,” the mayor added.

The ad notes that the City of Greencastle is seeking a “well-rounded, creative individual to serve the community as its parks and recreation director.” The director oversees a department that maintains and programs eight parks around the community, including the aquatics center and trails system.

The director is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Parks Department and also plans for the future needs of the department and community by developing and presenting policy and operational recommendations to the mayor and Park Board.

The director, who reports to the mayor, is responsible for developing and maintaining internal, interdepartmental and external relationships. The position oversees the full-time and part-time staff, including the seasonal staff of the department.

Minimum qualifications include:

• A bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation, parks and recreation, parks management or a similar field.

• Five years of professional-level experience in government, not-for-profit agency or private business in a related area of responsibility.

• Three years of experience in an administrative position with supervisory responsibility over program management, budget administration and staff.

• Possessing the following credentials: Certified playground safety inspector and certified pool operator.

• Possess a valid driver’s license with no history of impaired driving or accidents.

All finalists will be subject to a criminal background check and a drug test.

Candidates should request an application packet by contacting the city at 653-3100 or by visiting https://cityofgreencastle.com/job-openings/. Additional details about the department, the position and qualifications can be found in the packet.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Jan. 20.
